Mr Bennet could not guess what had happened between them. They were both excited but not enough to have an announcement to make to her father.
âWell, my dear,â he asked Elizabeth as they sat at the table, âdid you tell Mr Darcy your secret?â
âYes, Father, I did,â she answered sagely, and both Mr Bennet and Darcy smiled.
âAnd what is your opinion on her plans, Mr Darcy?â
He did not hesitate at all when he said, âThey are remarkable. Miss Elizabeth has to pursue her dream, regardless of the obstacles.â
âYes, that is also my opinion!â
âSo, Mr Darcy, you agree with a lady dedicating her life to writing and not to a husband?â Elizabeth asked, making her father wonder once again how contentious his daughter was.
Darcy hesitated only because he was trying to understand her question. âAre you asking about a principle or a particular case?â And Mr Bennet involuntarily smiled. It was a different atmosphere from Lord Guilfordâs house. That night it was about love and marriage and only then about principles.
âA principle, Mr Darcy,â she said. He understood from her eyes that their conversation was not meant to show him any decision she had lately taken to be alone for life.
âI think that writing or reading and getting an education are perfectly suited to any lady, and they do not interfere with a happy marital life.â
âYes, but being a writer means there is a lot of work to be done.â
âThen, Miss Elizabeth, marry a man who needs you to brighten his days and not to organise his house.â
A good answer, Mr Darcy, congratulations! Mr Bennet thought, trying not to betray his sentiments on his face.
âA woman must marry for love and not for her material wellbeing,â Elizabeth answered stiffly.
âSome women can have both,â came Mr Darcyâs answer, and they started eating while Mr Bennet looked at themâDarcy was the man she needed. In love and dedicated to her, admiring her exploits and approving of her battles. And she was the woman for him, a woman who would love only once in her life. She would take care of his home but also of his soul and never renounce her own plans. But how could someone make them understand and get them to set aside their pride and prejudice?
What can I do to make these two idiots declare their love? Mr Bennet asked himself repeatedly. He decided to give them more time and eventually discuss the matter with each of them after Janeâs weddingâ¦if nothing should happen before.
They ate in silence, but it was a friendly and relaxed ambience.
Elizabeth imagined that it was a simple dinner at the Darcys. Her father was visiting them and once gone, they would go upstairs for the night.
She blushed, imagining his bedroom, while he was also looking at herâhe yearned to show her his house and his bedroom.
âWhen are you coming to Netherfield, Mr Darcy?â Mr Bennet asked, determined not to let them dream any more but act in the direction of love.
âTomorrow,â Darcy answered, noticing how the colour of her cheeks changed.
